"For years friends had bet me that I could write a novel based on my stories about international law. I’d laugh. I was lawyer; I had no time to be a novelist. One day I found myself on a six-hour flight to Washington without a good book or movie. I took out my laptop to work, but instead began making a list of unusual deals I’d worked on, a list which ultimately became the backdrop for the BIG series.
